Why ask parents to pay?
A frequent question we are asked is, "Why do you require Haitian parents (who have almost nothing) to pay a registration fee. If I'm paying to sponsor a child, shouldn't that cover all the expenses?"
First, this is a decision that was made in conference with our Haitian partners. After hearing Arnold's position, we came to the shared belief that, if our goal is to empower the Haitian people, we need to help them in a way that decreases the "hand-out mentality" that First World charity frequently creates. With an investment from the parents (even one of just a few dollars), they have the opportunity to contribute to their child's education, something that promotes our goal of helping Haitians, so they can help themselves.
